Dialogic ideation

One of the many approaches to design ideation is dialogue, or interactive communication between two or more designers. Dialogue, and however tempting in the age of AI, is not simply a rational exchange of ideas, and generated with the help of LLMs. It also involves designers to open themselves up, to freely express attitudes and emotions as much as rational exchanges of first thoughts and ideas. In this exchange, the dialogue is rarely perfect or conclusive as ideas are proposals rather than final plans. That is, in the dialogue, each designer feels their own emotions, and listens to the rational arguments of the other in support of an idea without necessarily a full understanding of the feeling behind the position that has been expressed or taken. Dialogic ideation, then, in exploring and communicating intention or meaning of ideas, reflects how ideation triggers emotional responses. Indeed, dialogic ideation becomes a prologue to designing for emotion.
